Barbados Museum an ‘ally’ of schools
6/20/2012
By Kerri Gooding
On Monday the Barbados Museum in collaboration with the Future Centre Trust made a number of presentations to approximately 17 public and private secondary schools to enhance the literature available to the students in the institutions for research purposes.
Education Officer, Ministry of Education, Peggy McGeary said, “Doing this is an excellent way to keep the museum relevant. We want schools to see the museum as an ally.”
Delivering the welcome remarks, Director of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, Alissandra Cummins said, “This [the presentation] shows the importance and dynamism of our environmental education, as well as our educational programming in general but most specifically the role that our publications play in terms of the teaching and learning life of the country.”
Each school received a copy of the Museum publication ‘Preserving Paradise: A Series of Lectures to Commemorate the Life and Work of the late Dr. Colin Hudson’ and a copy of the 75th Anniversary Edition of the ‘Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society’. The students and the teachers in attendance representing the educational institutions were also privy to a presentation made by the Administrative Director, Future Centre Trust, Nicole Garofano entitled ‘Helping to Preserve Paradise’.
With June being considered Environment Month, the presentations were most fitting. McGeary said that schools, students and teachers need to become members of the Barbados Museum and reap the numerous benefits. Though the Museum makes concessions for students and teachers with regard to lower fees for using the Museum’s library, members get full free access to the resources and she encourages all to join.
