Create area for industrial development
6/20/2012
By Amanda Nieves
There needs to be a specific area in this country designated for industrial development, and especially vehicle maintenance.
This is the suggestion of the Director of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), Jeffrey Headley. Speaking to the media at the Vehicle Maintenance Seminar held as part of the EPD’s educational outreach for Environment Month, Headley said that the environmental impacts of bodywork shops and other vehicle maintenance facilities are far too serious for them to continue to exist in communities.
“I think what we have to do, and this is a long-term plan, we have to look to find out where we can have an area specifically for these type of operations in Barbados, we just cannot have them all over the place because they carry a serious impact,” he stated.
Headley went on to say that while the plan is long-term and will need support from Government, it is crucial that these maintenance facilities be located away from residential communities.
“Of course this would have to be recommended and supported by Government. There is a zoning policy and there are certain areas that these operations may not be. So it would be better planning to have an industrial area where you can house all of these operations together, and it must be away from residents,” Headley stated.
