Christ Church South holds informative session for senior citizens

7/30/2010

By Karen Alleyne

SENIOR citizens braved the weather yesterday to attend a crop over extravaganza which was held at the Dover Pavilion. After members of the Christ Church South Constituency council conduct research within the community, it was established that persons over the age of sixty five living within the constituency lacked the fundamental knowledge about what resources were available to them, and as a result the event was held to ensure that this information was bought to them in a palatable way. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event Buddy Lariel, chairman of the planning committee said:
“This event was planned as a direct result of a survey that we undertook in the constituency by going through the boundaries commission and looking at people who are over sixty five. To find out from the seniors how do you feel about the constituency, do you know the services that you are entitled to like, national housing, social services etc. What we found from this is that a lot of people did not know what they were entitled to, so what we did was to have a consultation which went very well and the persons there identified that they wanted more information on how they could make their lives more pleasurable”.

Attendees were also able to participate in numerous games such as dominoes, cards and a dancing competition. Whilst one of the major concerns coming out of the research showed that seniors were worried about their health ,there were also masseuse on hand to offer their services. Highlighting the importance of event such like this Lariel said:
“We decided to put on some event which would help people understand the services that are available to them, answer some of the questions and also give you some information about your health and where you can get help if you need it. Bajans are proud people and don’t like asking for help, however I want to say to you that you have made invaluable contributions to the development of Barbados and everything that is out there is because of the contributions you have made. Therefore if there are benefits going you should not be too proud to say this is my labour, I want what is due to me”.
