Middle income households in the mix

7/28/2010

THOSE who fall into the middle income bracket who want access to housing, are being assured that they are also being catered to.

That is according to Minister of Health Donville Inniss, who is also the Member of Parliament for St. James South. His comments came after taking a tour of his constituency with his Cabinet colleague, Minister of Housing and Lands, Michael Lashley.

“Of course the demand is great and we have not been able to satisfy all the demands, but I am certain that we can all agree that NHC has been moving in the right direction in terms of providing housing solutions for a wide cross-section of Barbadians. Now I would wish to disabuse people’s minds of their thinking that this Government is only catering to the lower income Barbadians in terms of housing solutions,” he said.

“I represent a constituency that is primarily middle income and I have said to my colleague and dear friend Michael [Lashley] over the years, that middle income Barbadians also need assistance to housing solutions.

“Prime Minister Thompson last year and previously, announced some initiatives, including duty free concessions up to $400 000 for first-time homeowners and some other financial packages that would have assisted.”

With that in mind, Inniss disclosed that he has asked Minister Lashley and the National Housing Corporation to assist them further, in terms of providing housing solutions for that income bracket.

Inniss noted that there is still quite a bit of open land in the St. James South area that remain the property of the Crown and since sites and services are available to most of them, they have sought to get that land on the market to satisfy the housing demands.

“I believe there are almost 100 house spots available in this constituency and we don’t want to get into the business of just selling land, and then people sitting and speculating on it.

“I think what is quite admirable [about] the Ministry of Housing under Minister Lashley’s leadership, is the fact that we are actually having housing solutions – housing solutions that are keeping families together, helping individuals to develop their families, to really put a roof over their heads, which is what this Government is focused on,” he maintained.
