Sports need better support
8/3/2012
The small team to the Olympics should tell us something. We need to give more support to our athletes if we are going to reap any rewards. A programme not dissimilar to Jamaica must be implemented without haste. It appears to me that we are only satisfied to reach the qualifying time. It would better if we target persons and put them in a programme where they can train full-time.
Mr. Bradley Ally won two races but still could not advance due to the times. His performance has to be commended but we expect more from having been to two Games. I am aware that the President of the Olympic Association and the Chairman of the Sports Council are very concerned with the small number of persons going to the Games. It is time that something must be done to help our athletes. Are we going to wait another four years and see us scrambling to assemble a team?
Mr. Suzki King did Barbados proud by retaining the Draughts title, but his return was very low-keyed. Why is it that no or very little support is given to Mr. King when he does Barbados very proud? I am of the opinion that Mr. King can help our tourism industry. Are we afraid of Mr. King’s mouthings? But like Mohammed Ali, he delivers each and every time.
Congrats to the West Indies team on winning a Test match. Special mention must go to the spin bowler Narine, Gayle and Roach for their outstanding performances. The man of the match should have been shared between Narine and Gayle. I am wondering how Otis Gibson and Dr. Hilaire are feeling at this moment. Continue to let your bat do the talking, Chris.
With this win, Sammy or the Sampson of West Indies Cricket will cement his post as captain, but I am very concerned with Sammy’s tactics. He is captain and the last over to be bowled and he had shut off from the cricket. Did anyone see him take off his helmet and prop on his bat? Did anyone see that he continue to bowl (rubbish) when he had two fast bowlers and allowed the Kiwis to get up to 351? Did anyone notice that Gayle is not given a bowl but others less qualified are allowed to bring over their arms?
When will the selectors get it right? Give Mr. Tino Best a place in the team and tell him to run in and make the Kiwis feel uncomfortable. Ravi Rampaul is too slow and the opposition will play him with ease. Prepare a good pitch with some pace in it and let Tino and Roach have their way.
The WICB must do something with these so-called “water and roll specialists” that we call groundsmen. The pitch in Antigua was too slow and our fast bowlers had to work very hard. Why do we continue to promote fast bowlers but prepare pitches which are no use to them?
