Never The Less: Christians behaving badly
8/3/2012
By Eric Lewis
Well I didn’t get invite to the wedding and I didn’t even know the couple, but when I read about the circumstances surrounding confusion over the wedding it made my blood boil, and for more than one reason.
Now this thing happened in America, a country where any and everything does happen, but still you wouldda thought that something like this was a thing of the past. Maybe that is why it made world news, and
I guess you heard about it as well. But in case you aint hear, let me bring you up to speed and then let me give you the reasons why it had me vex.
This black couple, Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson, who does go church at the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in Mississippi – a predominantly white church – did plan to get marry at that church late last month. So after talking with the pastor, them set the date and send out invitations.
The groom buy a nice suit, the bride had she dress all sorted out, best- man and bridesmaids in place, chicken and pork in lime and salt and everything set for this wedding. But the day before the wedding the pastor call in the two love birds and tell them that he can’t marry them at the church cause some of the white church people keeping noise. Apparently, them didn’t want no black people marrying in the church.
Can you imagine that? That you gine church every week and smiling with people and then lo and behold you hear that some of the same people you smiling with don’t want you bout at them church getting married?
It seems as though from the time the church was founded in 1883 that no black people were allowed to be married there, and them had some people in the church who wanted to keep it that way.
So them aint had no problem taking black people tithes and offerings, them aint had no problem with black people when them volunteered to paint the church or help with cakes sales, but them couldn’t handle a black couple from them church getting married.
So I was vex bout that, but also this: the same pastor who broke the bad news to the couple said that he would be fired if he went ahead with the wedding at the church, so he get frighten and shift the wedding to another church where he did the officiating.
Well sorry, if it was me he couldn’t come near my wedding, and I did done with that church too cause I aint know what kinda God he and them people could be serving. And I aint only talking bout the handful of people who say they aint want black people marrying in them church, cause obviously them got to be the ones with money and power. I also talking bout the others in there who sit down with them mouth shut and aint say nothing or stood up for “Christianity”.
To me, if you call yourself a true Christian you would not sit back and allow such blatant racial discrimination to exist. You would speak out about it, and if nothing aint happening you would leave.
The amazing thing bout these kinda situations is that you would find these people aint want no black people marrying in them church, but them wouldn’t have a problem with two men getting married in them church – well, perhaps, unless the two men was black. See ya.
