Overseas forensic technology firm sets up in Barbados

10/23/2009

THE area of research and development (R&D) is one that appears to have the potential for growth in Barbados, and the setting up a forensic ballistics research firm here on the island is an example of this.

Pyramidal Industries Ltd., proprietors of ALIAS Advanced Ballistics Analysis System, is setting up operations here in Barbados, bringing Swiss interferometer technology, along with research and development in the forensics field to the island.

Pyramidal is led by CEO and President Mike Barrett, who moved to Barbados this year and set up the company with members of the board, including Dr. the Honourable Sir Richard Lionel Cheltenham.

The company, which brought Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS) technology to firearms examiners and technicians in the early 1990s, launched the ALIAS System on Wednesday to the European Network of Forensic Science Institute’s (ENFSI) Expert Working Group Firearms/GSR, in Germany.

“ALIAS is the next generation in forensic ballistics because it brings a 3D imaging, correlation, visualisation and confirmation system that delivers an exponential increase in cartridge data available for analysis,” stated Barrett, who indicated that he was inspired to create ALIAS after attending an IBIS course in 2006.

After attending the course, Barrett realised that nothing of significance had happened with IBIS technology for forensic science in 16 years and, as a result, ALIAS – which offers unsurpassed accuracy – was born.

Forensic ballistics is a multi-million dollar industry, as it is used by law enforcement departments, firearms and gun crime investigation officers worldwide.

To assist in facilitating the transition and the company’s growth on the island, Pyramidal’s Chief Technical Officer, Ardavan Tajbaksh, is also relocating to Barbados from Canada.

As stated earlier, the area of R&D is one that appears to have the potential for growth on the island, with Canadian pharmaceutical company, Biovail, being such an example, considering the commitment that they made to the local economy with the opening of a new building earlier this year. (RH)
