ROADWORKS COMING

Over 31 kilometres of this island’s roads are scheduled to be repaved through a US$25 million Road Rehabilitation and Improving Connectivity of Road Infrastructure project.

The Inter-American Development Bank-funded project will run for five years and will include the Charles Duncan O’neal and ABC Highways, along with several other connecting roads.
Phase One, Two and Three of the Charles Duncan O’neal Highway will run from Farley Hill to Greenland; Checker Hall to All Saints; and All Saints to Farley Hill, respectively. Meanwhile, Phase One and Two of the ABC Highway project will run from the Bridgetown Port to Warrens; and Hothersal Turning to Warrens.

During the civil works, drainage, construction of sidewalks, rehabilitation of associated bridges and culverts and safety features will be improved. In addition, a pilot project utilising outsourced
performance-based contracts for routine road maintenance will be included.

Speaking at the launch yesterday at the IDB’s Maxwell Headquarters, the Bank’s Chief of Operations Javier Urra outlined that the improvement of travel times, productivity and road safety are the aims of the programme.

“The programme is also expected to contribute to sustainable growth in the Barbadian economy through interventions to rationalise, improve and support greater private sector participation in the transport sector,” he said

He pointed out that since 1970, the IDB has been involved in the development of transport infrastructure in Barbados, during which five loans had been disbursed to the tune of US$81.5 million for road and port projects.

In addition, Urra stated that IDB had a dynamic portfolio of 11 operations at a value of US$187.7 million in the country, with two new loans set to come on stream in the coming weeks for tourism promotion and sustainable energy.

“The Road Rehabilitation project is one of the most important operations in our portfolio. It amounts to US $25 million and is key for supporting connectivity, growth and development,” he added.
The road works are set to begin in February 2017. (JMB)
