MP for the City of Bridgetown, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic viewing the exhibition “BLP – Cornerstone of Nation Building”.

MP believes mistake being made in planning of Independence celebrations

Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic believes that the Democratic Labour Party made a serious error leaving the Barbados Labour Party out of this country’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

He shared this during the launch of the exhibition “BLP – Cornerstone of Nation Building” which for the next two weeks will showcase the 78 year-old political party’s contribution to the development of Barbados.

Acknowledging that 50 years of independence is worth celebrating, the MP for the City indicated that out of those years, the Barbados Labour Party formed the Government for 24 led by the late Tom Adams, the late Sir Harold Bernard St. John and within recent times the Rt. Hon. Owen Arthur. He described this as “significant’.

“I thought the Government of Barbados would have had the foresight or the sense of patriotism to have embraced and involved the Barbados Labour Party in the planning of the independence celebrations for this nation.”

“From airport to seaport you will see the footprints of the Barbados Labour Party on the landscape of development during those 50 years. That is something that must not be forgotten and even more importantly must not be allowed to be forgotten,” he stressed.

“But let me say it is not so much the achievement of the independence, even though that is important, most nations on this globe have achieved independence. We didn’t fight for ours as people say; we achieved ours. So it is not a big thing to have achieved independence; it is what countries have done in the period after independence – for me that is what is important. And I think we have a lot to be proud of in Barbados.”

Congratulating the Labour Party on the exhibition, Colonel Bostic further expressed “We need to utilise occasions like this one, not only to demonstrate and illustrate to Barbadians what it is this Party has achieved, but more importantly given the times we are living in, for us to send a message out to all Barbadians”.

“The achievements indicated in this exhibition came through very difficult circumstances at one point in time or another. But what these achievements suggest is that out of the ashes, when you have men and women of good will and a Party that really cares about its people – better can be done, better will be done, and like a phoenix this country can rise again to reach the heights that we reached before we were plunged into the state that we in right now”.
