EDITORIAL - Beware criminal element at Christmas

The month of December is officially here. As we well know, this month ushers in the Christmas period and Barbadian shoppers will no doubt be out and about in their numbers, looking for bargains and
gifts for the cherished loved ones in their lives.

However, whilst the focus is usually on the festivities, it must be stated that the Christmas period is one which at times brings out the criminal element.

And while shoppers are planning how they will spend their cash, the criminal element is usually planning how they will get away with illegal activity at the expense of shoppers. The criminally minded will be devising schemes to relieve shoppers and also merchants of their valuables and other prized possessions.

Be vigilant
Each year, we hear of pickpockets and shoplifters using crafty schemes to accomplish their mission – that of stealing. We also hear of a number of robberies and bouts of theft.

Shoppers and citizens in general should therefore remain vigilant during this upcoming festive season.

Now over the years, the members of the Royal Barbados Police Force have been taking no chances during the Christmas season. Around this time of year, officers usually make their presence felt a bit more on the streets of Barbados to deter the criminally minded, and we can imagine that this year it will be no different. So we can reasonably look forward to the Force stepping up its policing efforts for the Yuletide season in an effort to cut down on criminal activity.

Proactive approach by police
We hope that as in times past, mobile units will be set up at strategic points across the country. Popular spots for these units have been Sheraton Centre in Christ Church and the area of Warrens in St. Michael. The Force's presence has also been felt over the years at major shopping areas in Speightstown, St Peter; and Six Roads, St. Philip to ensure a more rapid response to any reports of criminal activity. Of course, Bridgetown is the shopping hub and at Christmas time the Force is always out on patrol to keep an eye out for criminals and also to give support to the local business community.

As is customary every December, the Force usually points out that loitering, illegal vending and safety on the streets are the biggest issues to contend with. As such, a pro-active approach is taken by the police to keep order. Without a doubt, this will ensure that citizens feel more comfortable traversing to and fro this Yuletide Season, whether for work or leisure. It is good to know that the Police Force has our best interest at heart, especially given that the criminal element doesn’t.
